Katherine Carter

Katherine has over twenty years of experience as a teacher, school designer, principal,  and educational leader. She began her teaching career as a primary teacher in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD), where she also designed and opened two schools, and served and served as multilingual coordinator. She was the founding principal of Manzanita SEED, an award-winning dual language elementary school program, and Oakland SOL, an innovative bilingual middle school program. Both schools were created through an extensive community-based design process.

Katherine is passionate about the power of deeper learning and language-rich education to raise engagement and achievement for all students. She has seen first hand how students from all socioeconomic, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds can thrive when given the tools and support they need to take charge of their own learning. She also knows the power of engaging family and community members as authentic partners in a child’s education.

Katherine holds a BA in Language Studies from the University of California Santa Cruz, a Masters In Educational Leadership from California State University East Bay, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
