Week 9: Book Writing & Illustrations (Nov. 8)
Purpose: Add story illustrations and images to your story to bring it to life!
Practice: You and your mentee can think creatively about how to illustrate your book. You can:
Practice googling images to copy and paste into your story book (remember to first google images on your own without the screen-share to ensure that you don’t expose your mentee to inappropriate images).
Try drawing pictures to illustrate the story and take photos of your illustrations to upload to your book
Take photos while in-person or over zoom of you acting out the story
Act out the story with puppets or toys and upload images of the scenes to your story book
Practice: Continue writing the book with your mentee as well. Remember that your mentee may need support with typing, so feel free to share your screen and type as they narrate. Please remember that as much of the story as possible should come from the mentee, but if they need help with thinking of creative plot ideas, you can definitely support them with suggesting ideas and brainstorming with them! You can also support them by asking guiding questions such as: “What will happen next?! How do you think our character feels right now? Do you think ___ should happen in the story now? How should we end the story?”
To assist with creative thinking, you can also have the mentee refer to our school values: “What is something our character can do that shows courage? What is a something they can learn in the story that shows growth? What is the character striving to achieve that shows excellence? What are unique things about the character that we can highlight to show their soul? What other characters can step in to help to show community?”
